Useful information on Dental Implants

Is a dental implant right for you? A dental implant may be the best option for restoring your smile when you have lost or broken a tooth. Learn more about dental implants and when they are right for you.

Dental Implants, What are they?

A dental implant is a post most often made of titanium but sometimes made of zirconia. They serve as a substitute for the root of a natural tooth. The implant post is placed in the jawbone. It is then allowed to fuse to the natural bone. Once this occurs the implant post becomes sturdy and can be used as a foundation for the replacement of the teeth. Implants can be used to replace a single tooth or multiple teeth to support a bridge. Depending on the number of implants they can be used to hold and replace all the teeth or support a denture.

Am I a candidate for Dental Implants?

People of all ages can be a candidate for replacement of missing teeth with dental implants. Whether tooth loss due to decay, disease, injury or a medical condition, dental implants can be a great choice. If you can’t wear dentures comfortably you may be an ideal candidate for dental implants. There are new techniques available using advanced technology where implants can be placed and teeth secured the same day. For denture wearers imagine being able to eat anything you want without the roof of your mouth being covered so you can taste your food. This can be life changing for people who have lost all their teeth and struggle with dentures.

Implant patients must be in good health. Most patients are still candidates even with certain medical conditions but should consult with their dentist. Your dentist will take into consideration your medical and dental health to ensure implants are the right choice for you.

What is the implant procedure like?

Your dentist will review what type of dental implant treatment is right for you. A procedure will be done to place the implant in the jawbone. The jawbone will then be allowed to heal around the implant to hold it firmly in place. The dentist will then complete the process by securing a post onto the implant and place a crown or artificial tooth that resembles you natural teeth.

Does implant placement take a long time?

Once the implant is placed, usually an hour or two, healing can begin. Healing can take three to six months depending on certain factors. If you are a candidate, a temporary tooth or teeth can be placed during the healing phase. Once healed the permanent tooth replacement can usually be completed in two to three weeks.

How do I care for my implant?

You care for your dental implant teeth just as you would your natural teeth. It is important to brush and floss as well as see your dentist every three to six months for dental cleanings to maintain your health. If there are any specific needs for maintaining your dental implants your dentist will let you know.

Choosing the Right Dentist for your Dental Implant needs.

old_people_smile

In the first part of this 2 part series we explored some important considerations when choosing a dentist that is right for you and your Dental Implant Needs. Choosing the right dentist to place and restore your dental implants can mean the difference between long-term success and significant problems

The Right Training.

When choosing a dentist for your dental implant needs there are many things to consider.  The right training is one of them.  It is important to determine if the dentist has had additional training in restoring dental implants as well as understanding the surgical techniques necessary for success.  It takes time and experience to become proficient in planning and restoring dental implants.  A thorough understanding of the different implants systems available and their proper use in each situation is necessary to achieve the highest level of success.

The Right Credentials.

One way to determine the experience level of the dentist is whether they have presented seminars or lectured on treatment with dental implants.  Additionally, have they published articles in scientific journals?   The ability to lecture and publish on dental implant treatment is an indication of the level of expertise the dentist has achieved and an expression of the depth of knowledge and experience the dentist possesses.

The Right Results.

Having the right training, possessing the right credentials and having the knowledge and experience treating patients with dental implants will result in many successful outcomes.  An experienced implant dentist should be able to show you before and after results of dental implant cases they completed.   With examples of before and after cases they will be able to show you results typical for situations like yours.

Other good sources.

One of the best recourses to determine if you have chosen the right dentist for your implant needs is to consult with a surgical specialist.  A specialist like a Periodontist or Oral Surgeon who places dental implants for many different dentists is a great resource.  They have the ability to work with multiple dentists and often know who is the best dentist for your situation and to restore your dental implants.  It is this “team approach” that allows for long term success.

Choosing the Right Dentist for your Dental Implant needs.

all-on-4-dental-implants-las-vegas-lrg

In this 2 part series we will explore some important considerations when choosing a dentist that is right for you and your Dental Implant Needs.

Choosing the right dentist to place and restore your dental implants is an important decision.  It can mean the difference between long-term success and significant problems.  Decisions about your dental health should be taken very seriously.  In today’s world we are faced with many choices.  Should you choose a dentist by the advertisements you see on TV or in your local newspaper?  Some of these can be very convincing.  Making a decision as serious as this requires research into these “Implant Centers”.   It may not be as clear a choice, as it seems.  Be sure to carefully investigate the Implant Center or Dentist you choose to determine if it is the right choice for you.

One Size Does Not Fit All.

When choosing the right implant dentist for your needs “one size does not fit all”.  Implant dentistry has become big business with chains popping up nationwide.  This type of facility might be fine for eyeglasses or clothing chains but may not be right for your dental implant needs.  One-size implant systems and one type of implant treatment may not be what are best for you.  Each person is unique and so is their situation when it comes to implant dentistry.   Not everyone needs all their teeth removed and replaced with an implant denture such as “All on 4” or “Teeth in a Day”.  This may be right for you but perhaps there are other options that need to be considered.

One “size” or “type” of dental implant also does not work best in every situation.  You wouldn’t expect to use the same implant size and type to replace a back tooth as you would a front tooth?  The type of bone and the position in the mouth need to be carefully considered when choosing the right implant for the situation.  Also, the techniques required to beautifully blend an implant tooth in your smile with your natural teeth is much more challenging than replacing a back tooth.  This type of treatment requires additional skills and knowledge of implant dentistry.

You get what you pay for.

When choosing the right implant dentist for your needs “you get what you pay for”.  You have seen the advertisements on TV offering dental implants at a cost that just seems to good to be true.  Well in dentistry, just like everything else in life, if it sounds to good to be true it usually is.  This is especially true when considering your dental health.  All dental implants are not created equal.  Dental implant manufacturing companies have grown tremendously over the last few years.  The goal being to provide dental implants based on cost rather than quality.  That could mean cheaper materials being used or manufacturing techniques that are not as strictly regulated for quality.  This could mean the difference between long-term success and significant problems.

The right choice.

When choosing a dentist for your dental implant needs there are many things to consider.   In the second part of this series we will explore how to make the right choice when it come to your dental health and dental implant needs..

Cracked Teeth: Signs, Symptoms and Treatment

Cracked-Teeth-924x400-300x129There have been many advances in dental care.  People are keeping their teeth longer. In daily use your teeth are exposed to certain habits like clenching, grinding or chewing on hard objects and over time this can contribute to the formation of cracks in your teeth. The symptoms of cracked teeth can vary greatly. With a cracked tooth commonly a person experience pain when chewing or sensitivity to hot and cold. For many people with cracked teeth the pain can be erratic which can cause difficulty in finding which tooth is the problem.

Treatment

There are a number of different kinds of cracked teeth. Which treatment option will be used largely depends on what type of crack you have, where it’s located and the severity of the crack.

Craze Lines – These are very small cracks that only affect the enamel. This type of crack is very common in adults but causes no pain and is very shallow.  Usually no treatment is needed unless it is a cosmetic issue.  Possible treatment would be bonding or a veneer.

Fractured Cusp – The cusp is the pointed section of the chewing surface of the tooth. If it is weakened a fracture may occur. The cusp may break off from stress or need to be removed by your dentist. After removal the pain usually subsides and a damaged cusp is unlikely to cause any harm to the pulp unless the fracture involves more of the tooth. Treatment may include a bonded restoration, an onlay or a crown depending on the severity of the fracture.

Cracked tooth – This type of crack reaches from the outer surface of your tooth to the root. This type of crack often causes damage to the pulp due to its location and root canal treatment is often needed. Following this your dentist will then use a crown to restore your tooth and protect it. In some cases the crack can reach below your gum line.  If this happens the tooth may need additional treatment to save it or it may need to be removed requiring an implant or bridge.

Split Tooth – Split teeth occur if a cracked tooth is left untreated. Dentists usually aren’t able to save a split tooth and the severity of the crack will indicate whether or not any part of the tooth can be saved. If some of the tooth can be salvaged your dentist will usually recommend a crown or similar restoration.  If this is not possible, the tooth may need to be removed requiring and implant or bridge.

Vertical root fracture – This type of cracks begin in the root of the tooth and reach out to the outer layers. Vertical root fractures often go unnoticed as they display minimal symptoms and usually aren’t discovered until the surrounding bone or tissues become infected. Depending on the severity of the crack, treatment may involve extracting the tooth or saving a part of the tooth through removing the cracked root. If some of the tooth can be salvaged your dentist will usually recommend a crown or similar restoration.  If this is not possible, the tooth may need to be removed requiring and implant or bridge.

 Prevention

There are a number of steps you can take to decrease the risk of cracking your teeth. It’s important to avoid chewing on hard objects like ice or pens. Similarly if you clench or grind your teeth you should consult your dentist as this can often lead to cracks. To protect your teeth against wear from clenching or grinding a night guard can be made.  To protect your teeth from trauma while playing sports or other activity a sports guard may be recommended.

Replacing Missing Teeth with Dental Implants in Palm Beach Gardens.

Missing teeth have long been replaced with fixed bridges or dentures.  However, more recently there has been a trend towards replacing missing teeth with dental implants which are a more comfortable and permanent solution. Implants, when placed and restored by an experienced dentist will look and feel like your own natural teeth and be virtually indistinguishable from real teeth.

Tooth loss can occur for a number of reasons including neglecting your teeth and gums with poor diet and poor hygiene.  It can occur naturally from age and also due to trauma.  The loss of teeth can have a significant impact on a person’s self esteem due to the esthetic implications as well as causing bite problems and difficulties in eating.

A major advantage of dental implants is that they do not require preparation or drilling of neighboring healthy teeth and they do not require special brushes and extra care for oral hygiene. When teeth are lost bone loss of the jaw occurs after some time and dental implants slow this process down and prevent excessive loss of your bone structure.

Dental implants are one of the most successful ways to replace missing teeth and have a very high success rate. How long they last will depend on a number of factors including the skill of your dentist, the surgeon and how well you look after the health of your teeth and gums once complete.  Dr. Lerner and Dr. Lemongello and our office staff have the skill and expertice all in a 5 star environment to meet the needs of their patients.
