Dental X-rays are a useful diagnostic tool in Our Palm Beach Gardens Office

Dental X-rays are a useful diagnostic tool we use to detect damage and disease not visible during a regular dental exam.  We are often asked  how often x-rays should be taken.  How often depends on your present oral health, your age, your risk for disease, and any signs and symptoms of oral disease. For example, adults with many teeth that have been restored may require x-rays more often to monitor the health of the restorations. Adults with root recession, which is common among  adults, may need x-rays more often due to root decay which can occur very quickly.  The amount of x-rays taken and how often is tailored to your dental health needs.

If you are a new patient, we may recommend X-rays to determine the present status of your oral health and have a baseline to help identify changes that may occur later. A new set of X-rays may help us detect any new cavities, determine the health of your gums or evaluate the growth and development of your teeth.

Dental X-ray exams are safe.  They do require very low levels of radiation exposure but the risk is very small. Every precaution is taken  to limit the exposure to radiation and ensure that radiation exposure is as low as possible.  A leaded apron to help minimize exposure is used when any dental radiograph is taken. Also, a leaded thyroid collar is also used whenever possible.
