Ways to Eliminate Gaps Between the Teeth

Do you have a gap between two teeth that makes you self-conscious about your smile? Does it cause you to avoid smiling? Are you looking for a way to get rid of this gap between your teeth? If so, then you will be pleased to know that there are a variety of ways that your cosmetic dentist can eliminate gaps between your teeth. Here are some of the most popular treatments to eliminate gaps between the teeth:

Cosmetic Bonding

One easy and affordable way to eliminate gaps between your teeth is to bond composite resin to the surface of the tooth on either side of the gap. Composite resin is a versatile dental material that has the ability to be color matched and customized to the natural look of your smile. Since it is bonded to the surface of the tooth, it is also non-invasive and preserves the natural tooth structure. It can also be removed in the future to be replaced by other restoration methods. In most cases, cosmetic bonding can last about 5-7 years.

Veneers

Dental veneers are ultra-thin tooth-shaped shells that are adhered to the front surface of visible teeth. These shells can be made from dental composite resin, but are most commonly fabricated by porcelain because of its stain resistance and strength. Veneers are used to fill in gaps between the teeth, but can also be used to correct other cosmetic concerns such as discolored, broken, and oddly shaped or sized teeth. To place veneers, however, a small amount of your natural tooth enamel will need to be removed so the veneer can be applied without looking bulky. Dental veneers made from composite last about 5-7 years, while those made from porcelain last about 10-15 years.

Crowns

Dental crowns are caps that fit over the top of your tooth. They are designed to replicate the natural tooth structure, as well as blend in with the teeth around them. Even though crowns are primarily used as a restorative treatment for severely decayed or damaged teeth, they can also be used to fill in the spaces between teeth to eliminate gaps. However, to place a dental crown, your natural tooth structure will need to be significantly modified. Not only does this mean two dental appointments, but it also means that having a dental crown placed is an irreversible treatment. Once your crown has been placed, you can expect it to last about 10-15 years.

Invisalign

While the above methods eliminate gaps between the teeth by covering them, Invisalign is the only option that eliminates gaps by changing the position of the teeth. Invisalign is an orthodontic method that uses clear aligners to gradually move the teeth into a more optimal position. This option may be ideal if you have multiple teeth with gaps, overlapping teeth, or generally crooked teeth. Although Invisalign treatment takes longer than the above treatments, the results can last up to a lifetime. Not only that, but teeth that are properly aligned tend to be healthier and easier to keep clean.

Overall, if you have teeth with gaps between them, there are several options your cosmetic dentist can use to eliminate these gaps. Each option has a slightly different method than the others, so you should be able to find a treatment that works for you. The best way to determine which method is best for you is to schedule a consultation with your local cosmetic dentist to discuss your options.
