A straight smile is attractive; we all know this. When teeth line up side by side, there is also far less opportunity for dental disease to develop. Most people also recognize that as fact. Research has gone so far as to identify a straight smile as an indication of a person’s character. That’s right! Study participants who were asked to describe what a person may be like based solely on their smile, they used terms like “friendly,” “trustworthy,” and “successful.” These are significant words, and they are traits that we’d all like to portray. To get from point A to point B, though, may require treatment to straighten crooked teeth.
There is a longstanding perception of teeth-straightening treatment that exists for good reason. Although we have had options like clear braces and Invisalign for the past several years, braces pre-date and outnumber these advanced treatments. Because there is a long history of standard orthodontic treatment, many people still assume that to get their straight smile, they will need to wear braces. If you are under that assumption, we invite you to learn more about Invisalign.
There may be as many misconceptions about Invisalign as there are about the way teeth need to be straightened. Initially, Invisalign was observed as more of a cosmetic treatment than a tried-and-true method of correcting misalignment and malocclusion. Many people also confused this aligner method as an accelerated form of orthodontia. Neither perception is accurate.
Invisalign has evolved as much as any dental technique we have seen. Even the flexibility of the aligners has improved over the years. Today, we use Invisalign to close gaps and to correct issues like underbite and crossbite (and overbite, too, by the way). The customization of aligners, achieved using sophisticated software, enables us to correct much more than most patients imagine. Therefore, there is no benefit to counting yourself out when considering whether or not you are a good candidate for Invisalign. To get an accurate answer to this question, schedule a visit in our Palm Beach Gardens office.
Patients who are good candidates for Invisalign can begin their planning phase immediately. This simplified step involves x-rays and other imaging that captures structural information in the mouth. The images that are obtained in the office are sent to the lab dedicated to the fabrication of Invisalign aligners. Here, all images are transformed into a multi-dimensional animation that demonstrates the progression of orthodontic correction. This animated progression is then remodeled into the physical aligners that will be worn throughout the course of treatment.

At Lerner & Lemongello, we feel proud to offer patients from the Palm Beach Gardens area a variety of treatment options to bring out the best in their smile. It pleases us to have the education and training necessary to provide innovative treatments like Invisalign® to teens and adults of all ages. It is understandable that any person who has a desire for a straighter smile is also interested in the timeline of their prospective treatment options. One of the first questions that are asked about Invisalign, as well as braces, is “how long will treatment take?”
Ultimately, the objective of any orthodontic treatment is to straighten the smile. Whether that takes 6 months or 2 years, the result is one that patients love. Still, there is value in being able to minimize the stressors related to treatment. This is what Invisalign does.
You may have heard of some of the details of Invisalign and the clear, plastic aligners involved in straightening crooked teeth. You may know that you can remove aligners to enjoy your favorite foods and that your oral care doesn’t have to change due to the presence of metal fixtures on your teeth. What you may not know is that the length of time you need to wear your aligners is partially up to you.
Just like an orthodontist would do, Drs. Lerner & Lemongello conduct a thorough consultation with patients interested in correcting mild to moderate misalignment. In many cases of overcrowding and bite issues, Invisalign is appropriate. However, patients with more serious malocclusion may obtain better results with traditional braces. When Invisalign is confirmed as a suitable treatment option, we move on to the next step, which is creating a 3D image of your teeth. A mold of your arches is also made. These models are processed in the Invisalign laboratory and made into the series of aligners you will wear throughout treatment.
The Invisalign treatment protocol progresses through the series of aligners in two-week intervals. Every two weeks, new aligners are inserted. These need to be worn at all times other than mealtimes and for oral care. Every six weeks, we will observe teeth and aligners to track the progression of treatment. Following the prescribed protocol for wear, most patients can obtain their desired results within 12 months. However, treatment times can vary from as little as 6 months to as much as 18 months.

A straight smile is not only good for your sense of self, but it is also good for the life of your smile, and to your general health. We could go on and on about the value of healthy, straight teeth, but you probably already have several benefits in mind if you are considering your treatment options. Historically, to get straighter teeth has meant braces. Braces have been associated with teenagers, which makes it exceedingly difficult for the average adult to feel excited about traditional orthodontia. That being said, teeth straightening does not lose its value after adolescence. You can get the smile you have always wanted, and you may be able to do it without metal fixtures glued to your teeth. But here’s what you need to ask yourself first . . .
If you were to have obtained orthodontic care in your youth, chances have you had no say in the matter. A parent would have made the decision for you, along with your dentist and orthodontist. As the adult that you are now, you are driving the teeth-straightening train. You get to ask the question “why should I straighten my teeth?” If you’re like most people we meet, your answer will have something to do with the appearance of your smile. While there is much more to alignment correction than esthetics, this is a great start, and it’s a perfectly acceptable reason to invest in your oral health.
The reasons that you may not be able to straighten your teeth will naturally arise in contrast to the many reasons why you should. Maybe you will hear a little voice in your head whispering “you’re too old for braces.” Or “treatment is too expensive,” or any number of other little white lies that will keep you from your best smile. There are very few conditions that would inhibit successful orthodontic treatment. So, the real question is, how do you go about correcting misalignment?

Once told your teeth need straightening, the odds are you’re less than thrilled. After all, ahead of you is likely years of metal bands scraping the inside of your lips and cheeks, wires poking you, and difficulties keeping your teeth clean.
Unless you opt for Invisalign.
The Invisalign straightening system consists of a series of clear plastic aligners that are virtually undetectable when worn. Each aligner is worn for a period of two weeks after which it is replaced by the next aligner in the process. The series of aligners is mapped out at the Align Technology Laboratory, where impressions and x-rays of the patient’s teeth are converted into three-dimensional images of the teeth. From there software maps out how the teeth will need to be moved and what each successive aligner will do.
Invisalign has many advantages over typical braces:
Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible when on the teeth. There are no bands or wires, no metal.
2. No fuss brushing and flossing
With Invisalign, you don’t need to worry about having to brush around your braces, or deal with flossers. To brush and floss you simply take your tray out, replacing it when you are finished.
You won’t need to cut your corn off the cob. With Invisalign, you simply remove your mold when eating. And there won’t be any of those food stuck in your braces.
4. Jump, run & play!
Braces can make being active less fun and even intimidating. Running, jumping, and playing sports can all lead to your metal braces scratching your mouth, or getting stuck on opponents’ shirts or your own. But with Invisalign you can wear your mold without worry; the soft plastic keeps your teeth safe without any scraping.
The biggest benefit of Invisalign is that it’s comfortable! The aligners do their job without you even knowing they are there.
